Flowers

The Maid of Honour's gift

I was commissioned earlier this year to paint a bridal bouquet as the wedding gift from her maid of honour. It was a large painting full of challenges including exotic frilly white flowers, working from photographs and potential composition issues. Lucky I like a challenge.

It was quite a large bouquet and the finished painting is probably slightly larger than life. I was supplied with the photos as the nuptials took place interstate. This meant compositionally I had to make decisions based on the best pictures supplied and create the composition by combining several images.

Initially I toyed with the idea of a background but as it progressed I abandoned that idea because there was so much going on in the bouquet it just didn't need a background. I liked the simple elegance of presenting just the beautiful bouquet of flowers.

So the first challenge was getting the drawing and composition set. The final picture became a melding of the two images above, with only a few adjustments along the way to make the composition work for me. On consultation with my client we decided to leave out the trailing flowers to keep to a squarer image.

I took photos along the way to show the progression of the painting. I am pleased with the the finished picture and learned heaps from the job. I hope the bride enjoys it as a lasting memory of her big day.

Back in the Saddle

Holidays

It was lovely to have some time away at the end of 2015 and into the new year. We spent time on the Mid North Coast and also in rural Victoria. I was able to photograph some new and interesting things to paint and visit some spectacular scenery.

The 2016 Canberra show

I entered the Canberra Show again this year and won the Botanical section, I also sold two paintings!

It is sad to say but in my observation I think the days of the old style agricultural shows are numbered. It seems to be less about the display of the best quality produce, livestock, Art and crafts and more about the overpriced rides and show bags full of lollies and plastic. I do hope I'm wrong though!

Art in the Garden with Friends

The 9th annual exhibition of the Australian National Botanical Gardens, Friends of the ANBG Botanic Art Group opens this Friday 18th March at 6pm and runs until the 17th April.

There is a stunning diversity of work on display and is well worth a visit.

Part time work

I have taken a part time job in an old friends Framing and Fine Art supplies store.  I am enjoying being part of the workforce again and the nature of the hands on work.

The work is another way to apply many of my skills. An eye for colour and design is useful in choosing matting, frames and getting the proportions just right to show work off to it's best advantage.

I get to do fun things like test new paints and papers to see if they are worth stocking.

Mini-break Weekend to one of my Favourite Destinations.

The Murray river.

The Murray river.

There's nothing like a weekend away to recharge the batteries. My folks live in a lovely rural area in the Upper Murray and it is one of my favourite places. For me it is a place rich with inspiration on many levels, the wonderful location and surrounding countryside, the garden which is full of native plants and the house which is full of bits of history.

The Home.

The Homestead, built in the early 2000's is Mud brick, built with mud from the site, recycled building materials, including all the doors and windows, even the staircase. A place full of rich colours and textures which only age can procure, it has all the wonder of a museum without the 'Do not Touch' signs.

If the furniture of our houses could last an age or two, what notions of our fortitude must posterity have!
In the scenes of our domestic privacy and retirement, we keep our energies awake by surrounding ourselves with the most terrific objects!

The Garden.

For me the garden is a wonderful resource for painting and drawing. Every time I visit there is something different in flower. The bird life is prolific including Eastern spinebills, Blue Wrens, several varieties of Honeyeaters and Parots. On this visit it was a joy to watch the Rainbow Bee Eaters at dusk cruising around but I may have to improve my bird photography skills to capture some good images.
